Recently, a group of parents and teachers at Munford Elementary school were joined by 25 members of the Chief Petty Officer’s Association (CPOA) of Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington to give the school a good Spring cleaning.
This marks the first volunteer activity of the CPOA outside of Shelby County. Previously, the CPOA held two volunteer activities in Millington annually. Now, due to the large number of military members living in Tipton County, the group is expanding their volunteer initiative to add three additional projects in Tipton County.
The volunteers also spruced up the outdoors by planting flowers and mulching the flower beds. “It’s a great opportunity for the CPOA to get together and help the community at the same time,” stated Senior Chief Carrie Persiani, President of the CPOA. The Tipton County initiative will be headed up by Chief Kate Hummel.
The Parent-Teacher Organization at MES provided paint brushes, tape, gloves, and cleaning supplies, while the Tipton County School Board provided the paint. “We appreciate all the help and hard work,” said Brooke Shipley, Assistant Principal of MES, “we got a lot done in a short time. I’m just amazed at how much we’ve accomplished today.”
Members of the MES Student Council also participated in the third annual Beautification Day at MES. “We appreciate Chief Hummel and her volunteers from the CPOA for sacrificing their Saturday to help our school,” said Mary Haywood, Principal of Munford Elementary.
“We’d also like to thank our teachers, paraprofessionals, staff members and their spouses for coming out, specifically Susan Gramling, Jennifer Edrington, Jennifer Agcanas and her husband, Joe, Barbara Keen and her husband, Scott, Amanda Mashburn, Debbie Pylant, Amy Willis, Twyla Buford, and Sylvester Williams.
“This event is a good example of a school and community partnership. We also appreciate that the CPOA members are experienced and know how to get the job done.” Also attending were PTO President Cindy Roach and PTO Vice President Denise Embry.
“It’s a great way to give back to the community, and it’s good for the kids,” Chief Sean Harris shared as he taped off doorways in preparation for painting. When MES students return from Spring Break, it will be to freshly painted walls and squeaky clean corridors, thanks to all the volunteers.
